Tooth Whitening
Having a beautiful smile may be even easier than you think. Many people achieve the look they've been dreaming of with our simple "bleaching" procedures. Dental bleaching can be used to correct many tooth discolorations. These discolorations may have been caused by staining, aging, or chemical damage to teeth. Using the latest in bleaching technology, we can offer a safe method for creating a beautiful, "brilliant" smile for people of all ages.
Our office now employs four different bleaching procedures. Hydrogen peroxide and laser bleaching are available as a one-time chairside procedures. Carbonmide peroxide is available in two strengths for those who are more sensitive. We review the pros and cons of each procedure and decide with the patient which is best for them.
In most cases it is recommended to have a chairside, one-hour procedure before you start at-home whitening applications. With people who have very sensitive teeth and are concerned about causing heightened sensitivity, we recommend a desensitizing paste to use one week prior to the procedures and a carbamide peroxide gel for bleaching. This usually is very successful at eliminating any discomfort.
Impressions are taken to make specialized trays to hold the bleach against the teeth. The material is used each night for about 1/2 hour, while the number of applications is based on how white the patient wants his/her teeth. The customary amount of times a patient uses the trays is approximately 6-10 applications after which significant whitening will occur. In some cases, the change is nothing short of brilliant. For confidence in appearance, bleaching technology offers improvements in yellowing, aging or stained teeth. For very severely stained teeth, crowns or veneers may be more appropriate.
Over-the-counter bleaching agents are available at drugstores and pharmacies. However, these products are ineffective or can harm the gums and teeth.
